The Montfort Funicular: a reminder of a Tragedy
On December 29, 2021, following severe weather, the Montfort Creek swelled rapidly—accelerated by the steep slopes of the hillsides—carrying boulders and rocks in its path, which devastated the funicular below and buried it under a pile of debris. These boulders and stones originated from a previous landslide in the Chartreuse Mountains in April 2021—three years before the celebration of its 100th anniversary.
Since then, work has been underway to secure the funicular and its tracks. After clearing the funicular, its restoration is now on the agenda. These images show the funicular after the disaster and before its restoration. In memory of this tragic event and of what this tourist attraction once was, between two eras.
